Custom Compressors and Vacuum Pumps for Space Development and Flight
Scroll Technology for In-Situ Resource Utilization
Scroll technology from Air Squared can support ISRU processes that bring us one step closer to calling space “home.”
In-Situ resource utilization (ISRU) refers to the process of using local materials on other planets (or moons, asteroids, etc.) to generate resources instead of transporting them from Earth. ISRU provides a critical pathway for humans to live and work for extended periods of time in deep space, drastically reducing payload and in turn, launch cost.
The production of O2 and H2O are generally considered the most important ISRU processes for lunar and martian exploration. On April 20, 2021, a compact scroll compressor from Air Squared on board the Perseverance rover helped NASA produce oxygen on another planet for the first time. This important milestone demonstrated the potential of ISRU and the viability of scroll technology to support it.
Looking forward, Air Squared is already developing a larger-scale scroll compressor for CO2 collection and applying over thirty years of scroll design experience to develop technology that will support future ISRU processes.
Air Squared has a long track record of developing innovative scroll solutions that reduce the size and weight in advanced exploration systems.
On April 20, 2021, a compact scroll compressor onboard the Perseverance rover helped NASA produce oxygen on another planet for the first time. The achievement represents the biggest milestone in Air Squared history, only made possible by an engineering team deeply rooted in innovation for over thirty years.
